Atlantic staghorn coral, scientifically known as Acropora cervicornis, is a critically endangered species that plays a vital role in coral reef ecosystems. It was recently declared functionally extinct in Florida, but we know where one of the last stands of this amazing animal live... and it is right off Fort Lauderdale beach. Join us before the Holiday Parties start and we'll explore one of the most impressive stands of coral you'll ever get to see. We are going to take our commitment to marine conservation with us and clean up the reef where they live. Don't miss the dive site called Staghorn Fields where you can see how important these corals are as a nursery for young fish and crustaceans. Remember: don't touch! The corals thrive in shallow waters about 500 feet from shore. This is a shore dive, and members are reminded that they must supply their own equipment (there is no dive shop at the site). Please arrive no later than 8:30 and be prepared to splash no later than 9 am. Parking is available for a fee using the Pay by Phone app. And we'll all grab an early dinner afterward at an as-yet-to-be-chosen restaurant. There is no dive shop on site and you must supply your own gear. This is an unguided, self-directed dive. Out Scuba does not provide dive guide services, and no divemaster or guide will be leading you underwater. As stated in our waiver, each diver is solely responsible for planning and executing their own dive — this includes monitoring your own air, depth, time, and navigation, and staying within your certification level and training. You are required to dive with a buddy at all times and to remain responsible for your own safety and equipment throughout the activity. Please make sure you and your buddy have a clear dive plan before entering the water and understand each other's dive signals.
