Blood drives have a long queer history! During the early days of the AIDS epidemic, the FDA precluded queer AMAB folks from donating, and lesbians (most famously, the San Diego Blood Sisters) stepped up to fill the need for blood and prevent blood shortages. The role lesbians took in stepping up to take charge of community health is the reason the "L" comes first in LGBT.
In honor of the San Diego Blood Sisters, Gossip Grill began the Hillcrest Blood Program, a community-led effort to make blood drives accessible in Hillcrest, and to help get the word out about recent changes to FDA guidelines that now mean more queer AMAB folks, and more folks in general, can donate than could in the past!
Blood drive giveaways vary from month to month; check out Gossip's social media to see the giveaways for an upcoming drive!
