La Raulito

A tough and tender telling of the early life of Club Atlético Boca Juniors superfan Maria Esther Duffau who, as a teenager, hustled to survive on the mean streets of Buenos Aires between stints in juvie hall and the psych ward, adopting a male identity (the “Little Raul” of the title) along the way.

“I feel like I’m in a perpetual quest to discover new (old) films depicting transmasc, butch, and gender nonconforming characters and stories. I first came across La Raulito in 2022, but it’s taken all these years to finally track it down and be able to show it. Like all of the films in this series, La Raulito has a wonderful quality of melodramatic earnestness. As someone who has always embraced sincerity in my own work as a filmmaker, I think this is one of the most beautiful and brave examples you’ll ever see of telling the story of a hero (a real-life national hero in Argentina) who you absolutely cannot resist falling in love with.” —Series curator Jenni Olson, queer film historian and archivist
